Wired headphones

The Sennheiser HD 600 is open-back at 300 ohms, typically $299 to $349, so it needs a capable source. The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x is closed-back, about $149, with a detachable cable.
Compatibility is not automatic. Check analog plug size, contact arrangement, microphone support, source power, volume control, USB audio behavior, and adapters. A phone without an analog jack may require a converter whose capabilities and quality become part of the chain.
Cables can catch on furniture, transmit rubbing noise, and fail near plugs. Test length and routing. A long cable across a walkway is a hazard, while a short cable can pull on the source.
Wireless headphones
Wireless headphones remove the tether and can switch between a phone and computer. They add a battery, radio, firmware, pairing list, app, and audio negotiation. Bluetooth audio is not one fixed path. Wikipedia's article on Bluetooth Low Energy describes LE Audio, built on recent Bluetooth versions, bringing the LC3 codec, broadcast listening through Auracast, hearing-aid support, and a lower minimum latency claim than classic Bluetooth audio. Both ends and their software must implement the needed pieces; a Bluetooth logo alone does not prove it.
Latency can vary with codec, buffers, source, application, interference, and processing. Video applications may compensate, while instruments and competitive games can expose delay. Test the actual job. When the microphone activates, some systems change playback mode or bandwidth.
Speakers
Speakers free the head and ears from pads or tips, allow conversation, and share audio naturally. They also expose other people to the program and interact strongly with the room. Walls, corners, desks, floors, and listener position change bass, reflections, and speech clarity.

Powered speakers need power and a signal. Passive speakers need an amplifier matched to their requirements. Awareness and isolation
Speakers preserve environmental sound but may mask it at high levels. Open headphones admit more surroundings and leak more program audio. Sealed headphones and earbuds can reduce outside sound; active noise control may further reduce some steady noise. None guarantees awareness of vehicles, alarms, voices, or machinery.
The Grado SR80x is open-back, so it leaks. Sealed designs such as the AirPods Pro second generation use active noise control, which cuts steady engine noise but not speech or alarms.
Choose deliberately for the location. One commuting route may require more awareness than an airplane cabin. Workplace hearing protection must follow the applicable hazard assessment, not a consumer headphone feature.
Hearing risk does not follow the connection type
Hearing risk is also a device-design topic. The ITU maintains Recommendation H.870, its guidelines for safe listening devices and systems, with the current edition in force since 2022.
The existence of an international standard for how personal audio equipment should manage volume and exposure says plainly that headphone output can reach harmful levels, whatever the connection type.
Speakers can produce harmful levels too. Wireless limits do not automatically equal safe output, and wired devices are not automatically louder. Use moderate levels, monitor exposure where possible, take quiet breaks, and respond to persistent ringing or hearing changes with professional care.
Cost and lifespan
Price the whole path: adapter, interface, cable, stand, charger, case, replacement pads or tips, battery service, app support, and external microphone.
